A bit about me

I've just finished my A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at St Olave's Grammar School, coming out with an A* in all four and 92% in Further Maths. In September 2026 I start at the University of Warwick, reading Pure Mathematics.

Before that I got a grade 9 in every one of my ten GCSEs, including full marks in Maths — top 0.1% nationally — and I scored in the top 10% nationally in the TMUA.

How I teach

I break hard problems into small, meaningful steps, so students learn how to think through a question rather than just memorise a method. That distinction matters more than it sounds like it does.

A memorised method is fragile. It works right up until the exam rewords the question, moves the unknown to the other side, or combines two topics you'd only ever met separately — and then it collapses, usually at the worst possible moment. Understanding why a method works is what lets you rebuild it under pressure.

So my sessions tend to be slower than you'd expect at the start. We spend real time on the question before the algebra: what is this actually asking, what do I already know that connects to it, what would I try first? That habit is the thing I'm really teaching. The content follows from it.

Why a recent student, rather than an experienced teacher

A fair question, and worth being straight about. I don't have twenty years of classroom experience. What I have instead is that I sat these exact papers this summer.

I remember which topics genuinely felt hard rather than which ones the textbook says are hard. I remember what the clock feels like in a TMUA paper. I know which explanations landed for me and which ones I had to go away and re-learn properly. And I'm close enough in age that students tend to say when they're lost, rather than nodding along — which is worth a great deal, because I can't fix a gap I don't know about.

Who I work with

All abilities, genuinely. I work with students trying to secure a pass and students chasing an S grade in STEP, and I find both interesting for the same reason: in each case the job is to find the exact point where understanding stops, and start from there.
